The benefits of cold exposure
Where we are from, it is widely believed that one of the worst things that can befall you, in the realm of low-level misfortunes, is to be unprepared for the elements, to get cold when out and about (or, even worse, get exposed to an air draft on a hot day, especially when sweaty). Many of our parents’ coffee break conversations with neighbors of our childhood revolved around consequences of someone ‘catching a cold’ or a draft, which can result in neck pains and reduced flexibility. So, it is funny to us that, knowing our background, we are about to discuss the benefits of deliberate cold exposures, and to admit to the practice ourselves.
Why on Earth would anyone want to do something so unpleasant?
As it turns out, there are many benefits!
· Cold exposure boosts your immunity-the shock of cold stimulates white blood cells production.
· It reduces inflammation
· It can boost your mood-cold exposure releases endorphins in the brain, which are known mood boosters. There are even clinical trials that showed improved depression symptoms with frequent cold exposure.
· It improves your circulation
· It can increase your metabolism-when exposed to cold, the body must work harder to maintain its core temperature. Cold exposure increases brown fat, the type that’s good to have, the one that burns glucose, and maintains steady temperature.
One of the easiest, most practical ways to do this is through cold showers-water temperature of around 60 F (15 oC) for about three minutes. It’s not for everyone, however-if you have a heart condition, give this a pass, since it may stress you too much. *
For us, getting a cold shower in the morning, especially after exercise, is very pleasant, and we can attest to the mood boosting benefits. It wakes you up and makes you ready for a busy day. Since we started doing it, we no longer feel the biting cold of our office, air-conditioned as if to make huskies comfortable.
Why, you may wonder, are we interested in talking about cold showers? Isn’t this a space for skin-deep, shallow topics of skincare? Indeed, it is, dear reader! But hear us out: If your skin is inflamed, the cold will soothe it. With better blood flow, skin will be better nourished, and it will be easier for it to flush the toxins away. In fact, the great Monica Bellucci credits cold showers for her cellulite-free silhouette. Even though we aren’t aware of any studies to confirm her claims, if La Regina swears by them, they might be worthy of our consideration, too.
Finally-the good mood! Nothing will make you look as good as the good thoughts inside your head. As the wonderful Roald Dahl once said, ‘if you have good thoughts, they will shine out of your face like sunbeams, and you will always look lovely’.
